Whether you're heading to a bike rally, transporting a motorcycle to a buyer, or simply moving your ride to a new home, ensuring your motorcycle is securely strapped down on a trailer or a truck bed is crucial. At Bike Life Towing, we know the importance of keeping your motorcycle safe and damage-free during transportation. In this guide, we'll walk you through the steps and tips to strap down your motorcycle like a pro.
Before you start, make sure you have the right equipment:
Place your motorcycle on the trailer or truck bed in the center and in a forward position. If you have a wheel chock, secure the front wheel into it; this will help keep the bike steady. Make sure the surface where the bike stands is clean and free from any oil or slippery substances.
Attach one end of the first strap to a stable part of the truck or trailer near the front wheel. Motorcycles typically have designated tie-down points, such as part of the frame, through the front fender and forks or handlebars (using handlebars, ensure you’re using soft loops to prevent damage).
Pass the other end of the strap through a secure point on the motorcycle and back to another anchor point on the trailer or truck. Ratchet the strap until it is snug but not overly tight, as over-tightening can damage the suspension.
Repeat the same process on the other side of the front end. The goal is to create a "V" shape with the straps pulling the motorcycle forward and downward.
Attach the straps to the rear part of the bike’s frame or through the rear wheel if frame points are inaccessible.
Just like with the front, attach the straps on each side and ensure they pull the bike downward and slightly forward, complementing the tension from the front straps.
Once all four straps are attached, go around to each strap and tighten them down evenly. The motorcycle should now be standing upright with no side-to-side movement. The straps should be tight enough to hold the bike firmly but not compress the suspension entirely. Once you try to shake the bike side to side, the entire trailer or truck should move as one.
After strapping, give your motorcycle a shake to test its stability. Once you try to shake the bike side to side, the entire trailer or truck should move as one. Check all the straps and ratchets again to make sure everything is secure. It’s critical to ensure no direct metal-to-metal contact to avoid scratches or damage to your motorcycle.
During transportation, it's advisable to stop and check the straps and the motorcycle stability periodically, especially after a bumpy ride or the first few miles. Straps can loosen slightly as they settle.
At Bike Life Towing, we understand that your motorcycle isn’t just a vehicle; it's a significant investment and a source of pride. Following these detailed steps will help ensure that your motorcycle reaches its destination just as it left—safe and sound. Safe travels, and enjoy your ride wherever the road may take you!
